"Dead chicken" joke

Jawaharlal Nehru once visited the Sarhand Club, Ambala Cantt., sometime in 1958. At the dinner party the food had been laid on the table for self-service. An officer, taking little notice of the Chief Guest's presence, put a good chunk of chicken on his plate and started eating hastily. Standing behind him, Nehru was watching this officer and then to everybody's amusement, gave a soft pat on his shoulder and said, "Aahista khao, murda hai, bhag to nehin jayega" (Eat slowly, it is now dead and can't escape).
