    Grampa and Billy were working out in the garden. Grampa spies Billy trying to put a worm back into the ground. "You'll never get that worm back in his hole," said the old man. Suddenly, Billy had an idea. He ran into the laundry room and came back with a can of spray starch.After a few sprays, the worm was as stiff as a board and Billy was able to slide him back into the earth."Billy! You're a genius," exclaimed grampa. He hugged Billy, gave him a dollar out of his pocket, grabbed the starch, and ran inside.Thirty minutes later, grampa comes back out smiling. He gives Billy another dollar. "Grampa," said the boy, "You already gave me a dollar.""No," replied grampa, "That dollar's from grandma!"

    Many years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave a new bride the following recipe for washing clothes....

    1. Bilt fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.
    2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.
    3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water.
    4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags.
    5. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water.
    6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and then bile. Rub colored, don't bile, just rinch and starch.
    7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch, and starch.
    8. Hang old rags on fence.
    9. Spread tea towels on grass.
    10. Pore rinch water in flower bed.
    11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
    12. Turn tubs upside down.
    13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your more...

    One fine day in ancient Rome, Julius Caesar turned his attention to a problem plaguing his mighty empire: laundry. Getting all those white togas clean was a constant pain. He also had some weird ideas that if he could get the togas stiff enough, they would be like a light coat of armor... not enough to last through a sustained battle, but enough to ward off an assassin's arrow.

    He figured the easiest way to get this done on a large scale would be to dump a bunch of detergent into a tidal pool, and dump the toga's in afterwards. (This was two thousand years ago... the environmental movement was restricted to a few druids here and there). The gentle motion of the tides would wash the dirt out. Afterwards, all that would have to be done would be to throw some starch in, and then pull the toga's out to dry.
